Born in Sydney in 1948, Stewart soon uncovered his passion for design and art when travelling around the world in his twenties. After gaining valuable life and work experience in South Africa, Europe and the United States, Stewart returned to Australia and started his career as an architectural draftsman in the late-1970s.
As his work had roots in the building industry, Stewart’s earlier artworks take inspiration from cities, shipping ports and industrial areas, expressing how the ever-changing face of Sydney is a melting pot of old and new. As life changed, so have the expressions in his pieces, with his more recent works taking inspiration from contemporary indigenous art which uses simple yet bold marks and a limited colour palette. Relying on his imagination mixed with images from real life experiences, Stewart creates unique contemporary artworks capturing the essence of a moment or feeling and speaks to his ability to express the unpredictability of life.
Stewart has been included in numerous group and solo exhibitions, winning over 40 accolades in his art career including a number of first prizes.
Stewart now resides in Port Macquarie with his wife Ada and dog Gizmo.
